Tochtech Technologies and Berwick Retirement Communities are planning to embark on a pilot program of Tochtech’s latest Sleepsense bed sensor technology. Berwick Retirement Communities is privately owned and provides senior accommodation in eight residences located throughout Vancouver Island and the Okanagan. Berwick offers independently living accommodation as well enhanced living services for seniors needing additional assistance with activities of daily living. Both Tochtech and Berwick believe that this latest technology can play a role in improving residents’ safety while supporting care staff by notifying them of emergencies in a timely manner.
“The objective of the pilot is for Berwick staff and management to understand how Sleepsense can help the residents and care staff, and how it can be effectively integrated with their current systems and operations. Tochtech is also constantly looking for feedback to further improve our technology, and pilot programs are an excellent way of introducing technology to the seniors community and gaining their feedback.” said Jessica Yang, CEO of Tochtech. Sleepsense pilot projects are currently running at a number of senior residences including Laurel Place, a Park Place residence, Chalmers Lodge in Vancouver and Fleetwood Place in Surrey.
Placed under the frame of the bed, Sleepsense is able to detect body movement, in and out of bed status and vital signs (heart and breathing rate). Real time alerts are then sent directly to caregivers’ smartphones or a nurse call system when a health or safety risk is identified. Sleepsense ensures care staff are constantly updated on the status of residents in real time without having to physically check on them. and are alerted when residents are in need of help or in case of a medical emergency. This new technology offers residents increased safety, especially high risk residents in Assisted Living and Long Term Care. Toch Sleepsense was the winner the 2020 AGE-WELL National Impact Challenge Competition.
