At Bethany Riverview, innovation is at the heart of quality care. From January 2024 to March 2025, the Complex Dementia Care program conducted a Toch Sleepsense study – to monitor resident sleep quality, movement, and bed exits. The results? A compelling case for advancing safety, comfort, and care planning in long-term care homes.
Transforming Care Delivery
The Sleepsense study delivered measurable impact:
- 24% reduction in falls during night shifts, enhancing resident safety.
- 38% sleep improvement for residents with historically poor sleep quality.
- 83% of staff found the technology “very to extremely helpful” in delivering resident-centred care. Staff reported be able to prioritize support during overnight resulting in significant gains in their ability to deliver targeted, resident-centered care.
Operational Efficiency and Better Workflows through 61% virtual checks
Sleepsense proved to be a valuable ally for staff, enabling more efficient night rounds—61% were completed virtually—and streamlining alerts for timely repositioning and medical responses. Staff shared that this technology reduced unnecessary interruptions and empowered them to tailor care based on individual sleep patterns and alert activity. Additional comments from a staff survey further identify benefits that the staff have noted:
“You can see tends when resident is awake & can help care plan toileting schedule, etc.”
“We are able to tailor medications on individual assessment from sleep data”
“Through Sleepsense we can show the family how many hours of sleep the resident gets through the night, whether is deep sleep or light. Families are curious of how their loved one’s sleep at night.”
A Scalable Opportunity for Long-Term Care Homes
The success of the study opens the door for broader implementation, with opportunities to:
- Integrate sleep data into care plans and medication reviews
- Train staff across disciplines on interpreting sensor insights
- Expand interoperability with platforms like PointClickCare
- Engage families by sharing sleep reports and trends during care conferences
Bethany Riverview’s study showcases how Sleepsense can transform dementia care—enhancing safety, improving sleep, and enabling data-informed decision-making at every level. As care homes look to the future, Sleepsense offers a proven, scalable solution for better nights and brighter days.
